TIOGA ADULT LEARNING LAB SERVICES Computer Literacy/Software Classes

Classes and workshops are offered throughout the year, which discusses the basics of using a personal computer at home and in the workplace. Students learn how to use software programs that focus on word-processing, spreadsheet, database programs, and Internet use. These introductory level classes are designed with the beginning computer user in mind, but also teach intermediate skills necessary to enable the student to become a more proficient computer user. Classes range in length from 1-day workshops to a full 6 week course, and are limited in size to offer students more instructor time. Since being first introduced in 1995 hundreds of Broome and Tioga residents have taken advantage of the free classes to become more proficient with computers. One student explained she had made great strides by the end of the class: " I now feel more comfortable with computers and went from knowing practically nothing to being able to write my own resume."

While classes are offered throughout the year, one-to-one help with computers is also available. Please call Literacy Volunteers office to schedule an appointment.

Vocational and Job Skill Training

Resume and Cover Letter Critiquing & Formatting
To assist students who are interested in obtaining employment, the staff at TALL can help critique a student's resume, help a student re-format a resume using available software or with the student, assist in creating letters of application for employment. These services are free of charge and can be scheduled one-to-one by calling Literacy Volunteers office.

Basic and Intermediate Typing
Software is available to teach and review touch-typing techniques. Lessons can test a student's typing speed and accuracy, help them prepare for standardized tests, get a job or become more productive at work. Theses typing tutorials are self-paced and free of charge.

Civil Service Exam Prep
Assistance is available to students wanting to prep for entry-level civil service exams such as clerical, secretarial, typist and custodial exams. Students learn test-taking strategies, and receive assistance in filling out job applications. As with other services at TALL, one-to-one help is available by appointment.

Reading/Writing Tutoring
Tutoring is available to adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills. Lessons are private, and are tailored to each student's individual needs and goals. In the past, students have completed meaningful goals such as passing the CDL exam, learning to read to their children, reading the Bible and working toward their GED.

Resources
TALL is equipped with 20PCs loaded with a range of the latest office and educational software. TALL also has examples of resumes and cover letters and interviewing and job search materials.
