History of Literacy Volunteers

1962 -Literacy Volunteers of America is founded in Syracuse, New York by Ruth Colvin

1967 -Ruth Colvin visits Vestal United Methodist Church leading to formation of Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga Counties. Leadership and management by volunteer board until 1979.

1973 -First tutor recognition event held.

1974- First English as a Second Language workshop held and books placed in Vestal Public Library for tutor use.

1977 -Board of Directors formed and office established in YWCA in Binghamton.

1978 -Agency incorporation. Affiliation with BOCES began. First Executive Director hired through VISTA grant.

1984- Board of Directors expanded beyond volunteer tutors to include community leaders and educators. Untied Way membership established in Broome and Tioga Counties.

1985- Tioga County office opened and part time Coordinator hired.

1989- TALL computer lab opened in Owego in partnership with Tioga Employment Center and Owego Apalachin School District using Tioga Department of Social Services funding.

1995 -Stories Worth Telling, a book of student stories, is published. The first “Taste for Reading” fundraiser held.

2000 -Got/It (Got Information and Technology) Adult Computer Lab opens in partnership with Green Thumb of New York and Catholic Charities of Tioga County in Owego. The lab closed in September 2003.

2001 -Literacy Volunteers of America and Laubach Literacy International join forces to become ProLiteracy Worldwide.
