About Us

At Literacy Volunteers we promote and develop adult literacy through volunteer on-one teaching of reading and writing and speaking English for those students who want this service.

The hallmark of Literacy Volunteers is our ability to provide one to one reading assistance to adult learners in a non-threatening environment free of classroom competition and tailored to the individual needs of the students.

Literacy Volunteers hosts a Tutor/Student Recognition Event each year. Student and tutors come together to enjoy an evening of refreshments and share their experiences and successes and to be recognized for their outstanding commitments to the advancement of literacy.

Our volunteer tutors undergo extensive training before they work with their adult students. Tutors and students focus on the student’s goals. These may be reading job related materials, prescription bottles, helping children with homework, getting a driver’s license and a host of other everyday tasks.

It is estimated that as many as 28,000 people in Broome County and 6,500 people in Tioga County are functionally illiterate. This means that they cannot read their mail, obtain and maintain jobs, or make informed decisions. It affects all of us as individuals who cannot read are often forced into public assistance roles and cannot be informed voters.

Being a volunteer tutor takes a special commitment. Tutors attend 21 hours of workshop training to learn the skills and techniques necessary to become effective teachers while working with an adult student. Our students may be either Adult Literacy students who need assistance learning to read and write, or English for Speakers of Other Languages students who would like to improve their English speaking skills.
